Tim Leberecht: 3 ways to (usefully) lose control of your brand

Tim Leberecht offers three big ideas about accepting that loss of control, even designing for it — and using it as an impetus to recommit to your values. People are interested in the issues, and they’re interested in the issues because they are important.” “We don’t want to be swayed by superficial eloquence, by emotion and so on.” In early 1969, he delivered the John Locke Lectures at Oxford University; in January 1970, the Bertrand Russell Memorial Lecture at University of Cambridge; in 1972, the Nehru Memorial Lecture in New Delhi; in 1977, the Huizinga Lecture in Leiden; in 1988 the Massey Lectures at the University of Toronto, titled “Necessary Illusions: Thought Control in Democratic Societies”; in 1997, The Davie Memorial Lecture on Academic Freedom in Cape Town, and many others. He reacted, saying “I don’t pay a lot of attention to polls”. In a list compiled by the magazine New Statesman in 2006, he was voted seventh in the list of “Heroes of our time”. Actor Viggo Mortensen with avant-garde guitarist Buckethead dedicated their 2006 album, called Pandemoniumfromamerica, to Chomsky. On January 22, 2010, a special honorary concert for Chomsky was given at Kresge Auditorium at MIT. The concert, attended by Chomsky and dozens of his family and friends, featured music composed by Edward Manukyan and speeches by Chomsky’s colleagues, including David Pesetsky of MIT and Gennaro Chierchia, head of the linguistics department at Harvard University. Tech-Enabled Leadership: Camille Rutherford at TEDxStCatharines

The education community is in the midst of a groundswell of change as technology transforms the learning process at all levels. In addition to disrupting traditional notions of teaching and learning, technology has also had a profound impact on individual and collective leadership within the school. A new genre of tech-enabled leadership that takes advantage of the affordance of technology to enable leadership actions that are open, collaborative and dynamic has begun to appear in many 21st century schools. With a focus on leader influence, tech-enabled leadership transforms the scale and scope of traditional leadership structures to facilitate the distribution of leadership actions to stakeholders that were previously shut out of the leadership process. As these 21st century students graduate with a digital toolbox of technology resources that can be used to affect their leadership influence, the question becomes how will our civic and political institutions react to this generation of tech-enabled leaders? BIO Dr. Camille Rutherford is an Associate Professor of Education at Brock University. As a former classroom teacher and university administrator, her work with teacher candidates, teachers, adult educators and educational leaders explores the use of technology to enhance teaching & learning and transform leadership.

More pedagogic change in 10 years than last 1000 years: Donald Clark at TEDxGlasgow

Search, links, media sharing, social media, Wikipedia, games, open source etc. are ground breaking shifts in the way we learn, says Donald Clark. Unfortunately, they’re not matched by the way we teach. The growing gap between teaching practice and learning practice is acute and growing. Institutional teaching, especially in Universities is hanging on to the pedagogic fossil that is the lecture. The true driver for positive, pedagogic change is the internet. More about Donald… Donald Clark was CEO and one of the original founders of Epic Group plc, which established itself as the leading company in the UK e-learning market, floated on the Stock Market in 1996 and sold in 2005. Describing himself as ‘free from the tyranny of employment’, he is a board member of Ufi, Cogbooks, LearningPool and the Brighton Arts Festival. Donald has been involved in major film, games, simulations, social media and mobile projects. He is an evangelist for the use of technology in learning and has won many awards, notably the ‘Outstanding Achievement in e-learning Award’. He has advised on e-learning for many global, public and private organisations, and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences…… also a regular (and controversial) blogger on e-learning!
