This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Is 26% proficiency in math acceptable to you? That’s the question teacher and Synergy Academies Founder Dr. Randy Palisoc asks the TEDxManhattanBeach audience. With only 26% of U.S. twelfth graders proficient in mathematics, Randy shares his solution: teach math as a language. Putting words back into math lessons enables even the youngest school-age minds to grasp complex concepts, such as fractions, that are traditionally thought of as abstract and difficult to understand. In his stunningly simple and effective approach, math no longer creates problems for kids but solves them. Randy Palisoc is a passionate educator, known for making math easy. A founder of the five-time national award winning Synergy Academies, Randy is proud to identify Synergy as an “in spite of” school. In spite of the fact that its students were disadvantaged and in spite of the fact that it did not have its own facility and had to pack up its classrooms every single week, his school was the first and only elementary school in South Los Angeles to ever win the National Blue Ribbon Award, and was named the #1 Urban Elementary School in America in 2013. Seeking a broader impact, Randy left Synergy this year to start Ironbox Education. One of the ways he believes we can dramatically improve America’s schools is by doing a better job teaching math to our students in a way that makes sense to them. Randy believes implementing a few changes in the way we approach math will give students the confidence and thinking skills to be more competitive in a global economy. Tim Leberecht: 3 ways to (usefully) lose control of your brand

Ernesto Sirolli: Want to help someone? Shut up and listen!
When most well-intentioned aid workers hear of a problem they think they can fix, they go to work. This, Ernesto Sirolli suggests, is naïve. Achieving education for all in Vietnam
Transcript Vietnam made enormous progress in developing its education system in recent years, but still faced challenges in rural and remote areas, particularly in meeting the needs of disadvantaged children-poor kids, street kids, kids with disabilities, and kids from ethnic minorities. Some children had to walk two to three kilometres along steep mountain paths just to get to school. It’s no surprise that some never got there and others gave up along the way. La Thi Huyen: “My name is La Thi Huyen, I’m a new teacher. I graduated this year. It’s my first full year teaching. One of the biggest difficulties I face in teaching these children is that all of them are from ethnic minorities and they don’t speak Vietnamese very fluently.” As part of its priority theme to secure a future for children and youth, CIDA, along with other donors, including the World Bank, worked with the Government of Vietnam for seven years to improve access to primary school for disadvantaged children such as these-some 2.7 million or 27 percent of all students in Vietnam-and to improve the quality of education in 40 poor provinces. Together, they: Provided more than 3 million textbooks to students, as well as school supplies, and in some cases shoes and uniforms Built more than 16,000 new schools Trained more than 312,865 teachers and 7,026 teacher’s aides La Thi Huyen: “I have learned how teachers should interact with children, how we should write on the boards. I apply some teaching methods that I learned to make it easier for my students to learn.” The results? By the end of 2010: Primary school enrolment increased from 80 percent to 99 percent Primary school completion rates increased from 72 percent to 94 percent Drop-out rates fell from 12 percent to 2.5 percent More than 2.7 million students now have a more hopeful future, and Vietnam is closer to achieving universal primary education for all-one of the Millennium Development Goals agreed to by the world’s leaders in 2000.

Waldorf School Education
Support our channel with a small donation at http://www.patreon.com/sprouts Waldorf education is based on the principles of Anthroposophy by Rudolf Steiner. Rudolf Steiner founded the first school in 1919 Stuttgart Germany to educate the children of the factory workers from the Waldorf Astoria Zigaretten Fabrik – hence the name. All kids, independent of social status or talent received the same instruction, which made the school a pioneer of social justice in education. The goal of a Waldorf education is to develop free, but morally responsible individuals equipped with a high degree of social competence and creative capabilities. Factual knowledge, homework and tests scores receive less attention. Storytelling and experimentation are the main method of instruction, textbooks are being avoided. Over the twelve-year curriculum, students learn math, literature, history and science as well as a wide variety of arts and hands-on skills. Elementary students paint, knit, weave and sculpt with wax. Older ones make patterns, books, pottery and sculpt in stone. Everybody learns to do music. First all play the flute, then some play string instruments and others join the choir. Students play non-competitive games and learn to dance eurhythmy. They do organic farming and learn two foreign languages, which in the first years are taught through songs, storytelling and conversations. In grade 8 and 12 the entire class develops a classical drama which they perform in front of their parents and friends. Waldorf uses a unique project based approach to almost all main academic subjects. Instead of repetitive schedules, a specific subject, such as history, math, science or even gardening dominates the first two hours in the morning for a period of 4-6 weeks. After that, a new subject gets the main focus. Steiner also invented an experiential approach to science whereby students observe and later describe scientific concepts in their own words and drawings rather than learning about them in a textbook first. Waldorf schools therefore consider computers useful to children only in their teens, after they have mastered fundamental, time-honored ways of discovering information and learning. In the spirit of personal development and empathy, competition and grades are being avoided. Teachers instead assess the student’s individual growth of character. Tests scores and grades are only slowly introduced to older students as they prepare for college and entrance exams. Today there are over a thousand Waldorf schools in 60 countries, making it one of the largest independent school movements. Waldorf has become a recognised educational theory in Europe and its schools have received state funding.

STEM Education Overview
A quick overview of what STEM education is and why it’s important
Dean’s Lecture Series 2017 – Opportunities and obstacles for STEM education
Although the acronym STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) has gained substantial traction around the globe in the last decade, its educational implication is much debated. Interpretations of STEM education differ in their emphases, for instance, on interdisciplinarity or integration, on developing skills such as critical thinking or creativity, or on introducing contemporary content (e.g., robotics, virtual reality). In any case, there is an expectation that STEM education will boost student interest and achievement, and that pursuing STEM studies will enhance students’ employability. Yet, implementation of STEM education poses serious challenges for schools and teachers in terms of curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and organisation. This presentation will explore the longitudinal research needed to determine the impact of STEM education on students, teachers and schools. Professor Jan van Driel A former chemistry teacher, Professor van Driel has a PhD in chemical education from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Starting Early: LIGO Science & the Future Astrophysicist | Zsuzsa Marka | TEDxYouth@BrowningSchool
Ms. Márka’s main contribution is leading the manufacturing and testing of a key subsystem, the timing system for the LIGO detectors. On September 14, 2015, the LIGO detectors observed that three solar masses of energy had radiated away from merging black holes, in the form of gravitational waves. Using a laser interferometer, which splits a single beam into two that eventually rejoin, LIGO was able to detect a small displacement from the normal wave. This displacement indicated the presence of a gravitational-wave. Zsuzsa Marka is an experimental physicist at Columbia University. She works on the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) project, the experiment that a year ago announced the discovery of gravitational-waves from a pair of merging black holes. Her main contribution is leading the manufacturing and testing of a key subsystem, the timing system, for the LIGO detectors, and she also leads the timing diagnostics studies for the collaboration. Beyond instrumentation, she also works with members of the Columbia Experimental Gravity group on various aspects of gravitational-wave astrophysics. ‘Developing’ with community | David Malmuth | TEDxAmericasFinestCity
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Why is that certain real estate projects catalyze community transformation, while others make no impact? David describes why NOT having the typical ‘advantages’ of a real estate developer -land, money & tenants – has proven to be his secret weapon. Instead integrating Innovation + Design + Education + Arts has involved the community in defining the future of I.D.E.A, propelling the project forward with a broad base of support. n 2011, David and Pete Garcia formed I.D.E.A. Partners to lead the development of the I.D.E.A. District (www.ideadistrictsd.com) — Innnovation+Design+Education+Arts — in downtown San Diego. This transformative initiative, located on 35 blocks in the Upper East Village, aims to create a vibrant, sustainable mixed-use district that will generate over 13,000+ design and technology jobs in the next 10 years. IDEA1, their first mixed-use project with partner Lowe Enterprises, will break ground in early 2015. Before starting his own firm, David was the Founder and a Managing Director for seven years with RCLCO’s Development Services Group where he provided development management services to a wide variety of corporate and institutional clients. Prior to that, between 1996-2002, David was a Senior Vice President at TrizecHahn Development Corporation. During his six-year tenure, he was the key project executive on Hollywood & Highland and the Kodak Theater (now Dolby Theater) in Hollywood, CA in collaboration with architects Stan Eckstut and David Rockwell. During this same period he also initiated the development of Paseo Colorado in Pasadena, CA. Video Previous to his position at TrizecHahn, David was Vice President/General Manager at Disney Development Company-West. During his nine years at The Walt Disney Company, he managed the development of over $250 million in projects including The Feature Animation Building in Burbank with architect Robert A. M. Stern and Disney Ice and The Disneyland Administration Building in Anaheim both designed by Frank Gehry. From 1993-1996 he spearheaded Disney’s restoration of the New Amsterdam Theater in New York with architect Hugh Hardy, which catalyzed the highly acclaimed development of additional retail/entertainment business on New York’s famed 42nd Street. David is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He lives in Del Mar with his wife Ann Berchtold. Documentary explores why higher education has a higher price
The rise in U.S. college tuition is unsustainable. That’s the argument of a new television documentary, “Ivory Tower,” which tackles growing worries and critique over college costs and student debt. Jeffrey Brown talks to filmmaker Andrew Rossi about the origins of rising costs and financial competition among institutions, plus ideas about how to turn around the trend.
President Moon’s picks for education and unification minister nominees face Assembly
국회 인사청문회: 교육부, 통일부장관 후보자 시험대에 올라 More confirmation hearings were held on Thursday to fill the Moon administration’s cabinet. The main opposition party continues to be on the offensive. The latest target was the education minister nominee, accused of ethical lapses. Shin Se-min has the details. Kim Sang-kon , nominated to head the country’s education ministry, who would also double the role as the deputy prime minister for social affairs, faced questions from the Assembly during his one-day confirmation hearing. Opposition party lawmakers tried to shoot down the education minister nominee,… calling him unfit for the position over allegations that he had plagiarized his research papers,… to which Kim had responded by saying he had done nothing to be ashamed of. Answering policy related questions,… the former education superintendent for Gyeonggi-do Province said he would improve equality in education,… and said he’ll monitor the increasingly competitive educational system once sworn in. Meanwhile, after a relatively smooth confirmation hearing process, lawmakers adopted a hearing report on the unification minister nominee Cho Myoung-gyon, . During the Q&A session, Cho told lawmakers that Seoul will respond strongly to Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile provocations,… while working to re-establish dialogue between the two Koreas. Also during the hearing, Cho said that Seoul needs to craft bold and practical ways to resolve the North’s nuclear issue. These comments come as President Moon had expressed that he would seek a dual-track approach towards denuclearizing North Korea. Cho also said Seoul needs to work on re-opening the now-closed Kaesong Industrial Complex,… once progress has been made towards North Korea’s denuclearization. The unification minister nominee had previously played a part in opening the jointly-run complex during his time as a presidential secretary under the Roh Moo-hyun administration. Next to face the lawmakers questions is labor minister nominee Cho Dae-yeop, who has his confirmation hearing scheduled for Friday. Shin Se-min, Arirang News. Education Q&A with OECD’s Andreas Schleicher
OECD Acting Director for the Directorate of Education and Skills, Andreas Schleicher answers crowdsourced questions for the Global Education and Skills Forum, 2014. Don’t miss new Big Think videos! Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Find out more about the Global Education & Skills Forum: http://www.educationandskillsforum.org Questions: — Will we ever see an international assessment that tracks student learning across multiple years? — Do parents have an impact on student success? — Is there a risk that good PISA scores might lead to complacency? — Is the humanistic approach to evaluation an important indicator? Transcript – We need to become better at tracking student learning growths not at just seeing where students are at any point in time but also seeing how they actually progress in their learning pathways. And actually a lot is happening in that field. In fact, the PISA assessment as we have it currently focusing on 15 year olds is looking into expanding to lower grades so that we can actually get at least at the synthetic level some sense of the progress that is being made in education raising quality, improving equity and also value for money. The PISA data show that parents have a very significant influence on the success of their children. We see that where parents have a greater expectations on education, where parents are more closely involved in the education of their children results are significantly better. And it’s not only in terms of the academic performance of students but it’s also in terms of their attitudes toward learning, their enjoyment of learning. Their persistence when things get tough in school. So parental involvement is very important. We also see that that parental involvement isn’t about having an academic degree as a parent or spending hours of time on homework. It’s really the interest parents show for the education of their children. For example, when parents regularly ask their children, you know, “How was school today? What did go wrong?” We can see those kids actually having a significantly higher performance at school than kids — even kids from wealthy neighborhoods where parents do not show that level of engagement. So a very important ingredient for success is to make parents part of the equation. If you do well you might think you don’t need to improve. But, in fact, the PISA data do not lend much evidence to this. In fact, some of the most rapidly improving systems are some of the best performing systems. They want to move from good to great. They’re actually seeing, you know, how is the labor demand shaping up in the future. What are the kind of knowledge and skills that we need to improve on? I’ll give you an example. You can look at Singapore. Singapore has always done well on math and science tests. But Singaporean educators have not been satisfied with this. They’re looking to how can we strengthen students ways of thinking, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving. Students ways of working, collaboration, teamwork and so on. So the education system is actually looking towards moving forward. Complacency is a risk but we do actually see very encouraging signals that improvement is taking place at every part of the system. You cannot improve what you can’t measure. So the measurement framework is really, really critically important. But we also do see incentives not only for our low performers to catch up but also for the strong performers to move forward further. It was a bit long? A humanistic perspective is very important to evaluating educational results. In fact, we need to get away from looking at education with a single perspective. Evaluation can only take part place in a framework of multiple kinds of perspectives. Looking at test data from students is one perspective. Looking at teachers views on student performance. Looking at other students — it’s this kind of multiplicity of instruments that actually help us improve education. And that’s true even at the level of teachers, you know. You can evaluate teachers on the basis of student learning outcomes. This is one perspective. But you also need to bring in other perspectives that value the broader responsibilities that teachers have. So looking at outcomes from multiple perspectives including these kind of quality — qualitative outlook is very, very important. Directed and Produced by Jonathan Fowler

Education: It Matters More to Health Than Ever Before
Did you know that your years of education can affect how long and how well you will live? Americans with fewer years of education have poorer health and shorter lives, and that has never been more true than today. In fact, since the 1990s, life expectancy has decreased for people without a high school education. Education is important not only for higher paying jobs and economic productivity, but also for saving lives and saving dollars. Created by the VCU Center on Society and Health with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this video is part of the Education and Health Initiative, a larger project aiming to increase awareness and understanding of the important connections between education and health. Occupy EdTech: Khalid Smith at TEDxEastsidePrep
Khalid Smith is an entrepreneur and a designer of experiential events that teach educators to lead in the development of technology enhanced education products. Khalid and his wife co-founded LessonCast Learning in 2010 based on an innovative professional development process she used to turn around a restructured school as an assistant principal. As chief product officer, Khalid builds tools for teacher preparation programs to engage teaching candidates in assignments where they apply the same skills they are trying to build in 21st century learners, by creating and sharing artifacts that demonstrate real world teacher effectiveness. Khalid’s search for a community of education entrepreneurs in his native Baltimore led him to participate, organize and ultimately assume a founding role as education leader of the StartupWeekend Education sub-brand. From September 2011 to December 2012 Khalid helmed the global 501C3, facilitating dozens of events, igniting the passion of hundreds of educator entrepreneurs and producing start-ups with innovations currently being evaluated in thousands of classrooms. More importantly, Khalid learned of the need for an experiential education process that aims to bridge the chasm between the education reform and entrepreneurial/innovation movements. In addition to LessonCast, Khalid and Nicole are dedicated parents to their two children Elijah (6) and Nala (4), and tirelessly push for reform in the PreK through 2nd grade educational system and for better models of personalized instruction for all learners. Prior to his founding roles with LessonCast and StartupWeekend Education, Khalid had a 10-year career as an engineer and brand manager for Procter and Gamble. He also founded a non-profit management consultancy and worked as a community organizer during the Obama for American campaign of 2008. Very, very long ago, he earned degrees in chemical and bio-medical engineering that today gather a lot of dust but taught him a lot about grit. Do you *really* love your child?: Dale Stephens at TEDxEastsidePrep
At 20, Dale Stephens founded UnCollege.org because we’re paying too much for college and learning too little. It’s no secret that college doesn’t prepare students for the real world. Student loan debt recently eclipsed credit card debt for the first time in history and now tops 1 trillion dollars. And the throngs of unemployed graduates chasing the same jobs makes us wonder whether there’s a better way to “make it” in today’s marketplace. There is—and Dale Stephens is proof of that. In Hacking Your Education, Stephens speaks to a new culture of “hackademics” who think college diplomas are antiquated. Hackademics abandon society’s linear path to success and bend institutions to fit their own reality. Stephens shows how he and dozens of others have hacked their education, and how you can too. You don’t need to be a genius or especially motivated to succeed outside school. The real requirements are much simpler: curiosity, confidence, and grit. Stephens is a sought-after education expert appearing on major news networks including CNN, ABC, NPR, CBS, Fox, and TechCrunch. His work has been covered by the New York Times and New York Magazine to Fast Company and Forbes. He has spoken around the world at high-profile events, from debating Vivek Wadhwa onstage at TED 2012 to lecturing at the New York Times to speaking to C-level executives at NBC Universal. He works frequently with universities who realize their model of education must change to survive in the 21st century. In May 2011 Stephens was selected out of hundreds of individuals around the world as a Thiel Fellow, a program recognizing the top twenty-four entrepreneurs around the world under the age of twenty. In addition to leading UnCollege, Stephens advises education and technology companies. Rejected for being young or inexperienced, he has risen above skepticism to do what many said he couldn’t. Because he bridges the gap between teens and adults, he doesn’t just relate to both but shares their experiences, fears, and challenges. Stephens’ energetic, informative and down-to-earth presentations draw on his own experience to address generation-specific issues most relevant to people in their 10s, 20s, and 30s. “Using Technology For Engagement and Assessment” Sydney Beckman, Duncan School of Law
Sydney Beckman, Lincoln Memorial University, Duncan School of Law: “Using Technology For Engagement and Assessment” This video is part of a video collection from the Igniting Law Teaching, hosted by LegalED at American University Washington College of Law. Responding to the calls for legal education reform, the conference — the first of its kind — created a forum for professors experimenting with cutting edge technologies and techniques in law teaching with the goal of spreading their ideas to the broader community. The talks were modeled on TEDx Talks, with each speaker on stage alone, giving a well scripted and performed talk about an aspect of law school pedagogy. The goal of LegalED is to curate a growing collection of short, 10-minute videos on law school-related pedagogy that will inspire innovation and experimentation by law professors to bring more active learning and practical skills training into the law school curriculum. ISTE 2016 EdTekTalks | Dr. Alex Thornton provides strategies for boosting digital health & wellness
Dr. Alex Thornton taught for seven years in Canada and Boston before shifting his focus to Educational Leadership. As Doctor of Education at RTSG Neuroscience, he brings his expertise in education and school program implementation to the consulting firm’s education related projects and studies. RTSG creates large scale interventions that use exercise to benefit groups of people. Dr. Thornton works in schools to maximize the benefits of physical education. His work has shown that, if done correctly, PE can improve academic performance in other subjects. He also collaborates closely with other educators, researchers and renowned thinkers to bring findings from sleep, nutrition, play, and Neuro/Biofeedback research to educational and organizational settings. His goal is to incorporate findings from neuropsychology into educational practice. Dr. Thornton joined us at the ISTE 2016 Conference EdTekTalks to share his findings on using exercise to change school cultures and optimize student learning. Using EEG and ERP data, he outlined in his talk the ways that exercise promotes attention and brain growth. Just a couple minutes of exercise can help students focus better and retain more information. The other side of the coin, however, is proper sleep. Memory is consolidated during sleep, and as students are getting less sleep than they did in the past—partly due to constant access to the Internet, online games, etc.—they are struggling harder to learn and retain information. Technology, says Thornton, interferes with both exercise and sleep, but also offers ideas and solutions to get more exercise and sleep. For educators and parents, finding the right balance is key to helping students do their best learning.

Starr Sackstein Keynote MassCUE and MASCD Spring Leadership Conference 2017
Starr Sackstein is a nationally board certified teacher who has taught in the NYC public school system for 15 years. Sackstein has written books about assessment reform and student empowerment as well as presenting a TEDx talk about her journey to give up grades. Starr’s Presentation: Empower Students by Engaging them in the Assessment Process Every child has the right to engage in their learning starting from their mistakes straight through to their successes. We must give students the language they need to adequately co-construct and design learning opportunities and then express their own progress and growth in a meaningful way. Students certainly don’t need grades to communicate what they know and can do, they just need the opportunity to share in their own words in the language of the standards to express strengths and challenges. Leveraging Technology to Empower the Whole Child #MALeads17 MassCUE (Massachusetts Computer Using Educators) and MASCD (Massachusetts Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) have joined forces to bring together classroom and educational leaders for a one-day event of powerful presentations, workshops, hands-on sessions, and informal gatherings to address the critical issues of education. Both organizations believe that each child, in each school, in each of our communities deserves to be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. Thus, this year we will focus on how leaders can leverage technology to reach the whole child.

This videos, and others like it, are available on LegalED, a website developed by a community of law professors interested in using online technologies to facilitate more active, problem-based learning in the classroom, in addition to more assessment and feedback. #17 with Audrey Jarre, The Edtech World Tour – Global EdTech Case Studies
What’s in this episode? Outcomes of tour of ten countries and 2 years work looking at education innovation Why education is local, not global Why storytelling is so essential; getting the buy-in of parents and students The power of gamified education Why EdTech is not just about the consumption of content, but the creation of content Why education innovation needs the language of teachers and of business Why low-tech education innovation needs showcasing vs. VR, AI and hype terms The opportunity of EdTech for special educational needs Creating a clear brand around French EdTech – implications for start-ups Addressing the silos of education Creating impactful low-hype EdTech How Svenia and Audrey met at business school and realised they learnt more through ‘doing’ than attending ‘learning classes’. How they applied this to education innovation more broadly. Most memorable part of the tour spent : South Africa with Green Shoots Education Quotes: On next steps in Audrey’s career: ‘I don’t think working for the ministry (of education) would be the solution.’ On liking/disliking school ‘I think I loved it.’ ‘I really want to go back into teaching at some point.’ On collaboration: ‘You need people who speak both languages – the one of the teachers and the one of the business people.’ Reading and Resources: The Edtech World Tour & Liberte Living Lab http://www.edtechworldtour.com/#report https://liberte.paris/ http://www.edtechworldtour.com/#partners EdTech Europe: http://edtechxeurope.com/ French MOE: http://www.education.gouv.fr/

What’s the difference between a scientific law and theory? – Matt Anticole
View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/what-s-the-… Chat with a friend about an established scientific theory, and she might reply, “Well, that’s just a theory.” But a conversation about an established scientific law rarely ends with “Well, that’s just a law.” Why is that? What is the difference between a theory and a law… and is one “better”? Matt Anticole shows why science needs both laws and theories to understand the whole picture.
